Comic Book Synopsis / Plot

Written by Rob Johnson

In Secret Invasion #8 the Skrull-Jarvis ran off with Danielle, the baby child of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Last issue the New Avengers tried to find him with help from the Fantastic Four. In the end Luke in desperation went to Norman Osborn for help because he now has all the reigns of power.

Osborn, with his bodyguards Bullseye and Venom, takes Cage to the Raft prison (now guarded by HAMMER agents, NO's replacement for SHIELD) where captured Skrulls are held. They interview 2 of them to ask the whereabouts of Skrull-Jarvis. When no answer is forthcoming NO gets Venom to bite the head off 1 of the Skrulls to encourage the other 1. And he says that if the other has no information then Venom can have him too, there's plenty more prisoners they can talk to.

The Skrull says he didn't know SJ or where he might be holed up. But he tells them of a meeting place where SJ might go. We see flashbacks to meetings in a warehouse between the top Skrulls including Jarvis, like ones we've seen in earlier issues of this mag. Afterwards NO says that 5 other Skrulls have said the same thing, so it's probably right.

It seems that this warehouse has a teleportation device to send Skrulls off Earth to safety. But a single Skrull can't operate it by himself. (It sounds like 1 Skrull is needed to send the other Skrull, which means there's always going to be 1 Skrull left behind.) Hopefully SJ keeps going there in hope. And hopefully he hasn't succeeded in leaving yet.

They set watch on the place and eventually Jarvis does turn up with the baby. But he finds Luke Cage inside waiting for him. Luke asks for the baby and promises not to kill the Skrull if he complies. SJ demands that all the Skrull prisoners be released, but Cage isn't negotiating.

Jarvis hands over Danielle who seems OK. Then a sniper shoots the Skrull in the head through a window. It's Bullseye.

Later Luke meets his wife Jessica Jones in Avengers Tower with Osborn and his right-hand woman Victoria Hand. A SHIELD medic checked Danielle over and she is OK. Norman says Jessica is free to keep living with her baby. It's alright for her to continue as an unregistered superhero as long as she doesn't use her powers, which she is happy about. And as long as Cage upholds his end of the deal to work for him.

But when the couple return to Jessica's apartment her belongings are packed up. She phones someone while Luke goes to clarify the situation with Osborn.

Cage returns to NO and VH, and Bullseye and Venom are there. Cage has the Wrecker's crowbar. He uses that and his fists to beat down the 2 supervillains. And NO and VH see JJ and baby flying past outside with Ms Marvel. Luke tells Norman he's a murdering villain and there's no way he'll work for him. But because he found the baby he'll let him live. Then he leaps out of a window and his invulnerable body lands at the bottom of the Tower. Osborn tells Hand to add him to the list of enemies to be dealt with.

The family and MsM join the rest of the New Avengers (Captain America (Bucky), Iron Fist, Mockingbird, Ronin, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman and Wolverine) in their new HQ in Cap's secret hideout. But they see a TV report of Osborn announcing the formation of his new Avengers (in Dark Avengers #1) where he takes the role of Iron Patriot with Iron Man armour painted in (the original) Cap's colours. They see Ares and Sentry of the Mighty Avengers plus people claiming to be Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Ms Marvel, Spider-Man and Wolverine.

Clint Barton (Ronin and ex-Hawkeye) declares that they'll go kick the imposters' butts.

Rob (April 4, 2017)
This issue and following ones obviously fit in the Captain America Library because Bucky-Cap is here. But I also include them in the Iron Man Lib for Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot.

Ares and Sentry are on the cover but they don't play a real part in this issue outside of the TV news coverage of the (Dark) Avengers.

Cage may have been lying about the Wrecker's crowbar. I don't think he needs its magic to do what he does here. And Wrecker himself is currently wandering around with a crowbar. He'll be in next issue, and he was in Secret Invasion #6-8.

Norman Osborn's list of enemies may well be the titular list of the group of Dark Reign: The List 1-shots.

Ms Marvel was technically part of the Mighty Avengers when she helped her friends Luke and Jessica search for Danielle in #48. Since then she helped Henry Pym with his wife Wasp's funeral in Mighty Avengers #20 and refused to join Osborn's Dark Avengers in a flashback in DAv#1.

I described the chronology of the NAv members last issue before the final scene where Luke went to NO for help.
Most weren't busy, including Bucky-Cap and Wolverine.
Ronin & Mockingbird atttended Wasp's funeral.
Spider-Man did a lot.

Apart from Ares and Sentry the other Dark Avengers are imposters. Hawkeye and Spider-Man are Bullseye and Venom as in this issue. Captain Marvel is Noh-Varr/Marvel Boy. Wolverine is his son Daken. And Ms Marvel is Moonstone (Karla Sofen) wearing an old Ms Marvel costume that Carol Danvers gave to Ultragirl (in Av: Initiative #12) and Osborn's lawyer reclaimed (Av:I#21-23).
